Now that the driver is installed, we can attach our Firewire cable and connect the Pinnacle device to our DV camera. Open the Pinnacle software, find the Firewire tab and select the firewire cable you just connected.

If you are convinced that your PC has a real hardware problem (i.e. it is not a driver problem) instead of a software problem, it may be worth having a look at the Event Viewer at http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/Windows/EventViewer/default.mspx to see if it has any clues, it may be worth just giving up and buying a new PC.
