CFB 27 Why Your Offensive Line Keeps Getting Destroyed (And How to Fix It)

The offensive line is the most complained-about position group in CFB 27, and for good reason. When your offensive line is getting destroyed, the entire offense falls apart. Quarterbacks get pressured before routes develop. Running backs get hit in the backfield. Third-and-short becomes impossible. But most offensive line problems are fixable with the right diagnosis and adjustment.

The first diagnostic question is whether the problem is talent or scheme. If your offensive linemen are simply outmatched, with defensive linemen rated 10 or more points higher, no amount of schematic adjustment will fix the problem entirely. You need to recruit better linemen. But most offensive line complaints come from situations where the talent is adequate and the scheme is the issue.

Pass protection breakdowns are usually caused by one of three things: failure to identify the blitz, failure to slide protection correctly, or failure to account for a specific pass rusher. Identifying the blitz starts with the pre-snap read: counting defenders in the box, identifying potential blitzers, and setting your protection accordingly. The protection slide mechanic allows you to shift the offensive line to the side where pressure is most likely. And the double-team mechanic allows you to specifically account for an elite pass rusher.

Run blocking problems have different causes than pass protection problems. The most common run blocking issue is poor play selection relative to the defensive front. An inside zone run into a loaded box is doomed regardless of your offensive line talent. Checking out of bad run looks at the line of scrimmage, using audibles to get into more favorable plays, prevents the negative plays that kill drives.

The offensive line cohesion mechanic is a hidden variable that affects blocking effectiveness. Offensive lines that have played together for multiple seasons block better than lines with the same ratings that were assembled through the transfer portal in one offseason. The game tracks how many snaps each offensive line combination has played together and applies a cohesion bonus that improves with experience. This mechanic rewards patience and stability in offensive line roster construction.

The offensive line ratings that matter most are different for run blocking and pass protection. For pass protection, pass block and awareness are the critical attributes. For run blocking, run block and strength are the critical attributes. When recruiting offensive linemen, prioritize the attributes that match your offensive identity rather than chasing the highest overall ratings.
