Executive producer, Josh Holmes stated that the development team wanted to provide much gameplay variety and support different play styles in multiplayer.[35] On launch, the game will include over twenty multiplayer maps, and the team plans to provide an additional fifteen maps as free downloadable content by June 2016.[35] 343 Industries chose to make additional maps freely available as they did not want to divide the player base.[35]

Halo 5 was supported by free post-release content updates that added new features, weapons, and multiplayer maps. Holmes explained that the studio did not want to segregate the player base by distributing maps as paid downloadable content.[67][68]

The install size for Halo 5: Guardians on Xbox One X has been revealed coming in at a massive size with the enhanced option being available starting November 2, 2017 and now taking up a total of 100.97 GB on the Xbox Store. The base model size is noted at 109 GB prior to the update. It looks as though compression or the new dynamic content download was at play to increase the size (the update) while decreasing the overall space on the console.
